No matter what season it is,  you can break out the fire pit with friends and family. After all, “According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits, or outdoor fireplaces, are the number one requested design feature today,” (HGTV).

While portable fire pits are a lot of fun, there are some serious safety precautions to keep in mind when handling them.

  1. Your outdoor fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
  2. Avoid windy conditions by checking the weather forecast
  3. Stay up to date on any burn bans that might be in effect
  4. Pick up leaves and any other combustible materials in and around the fire pit
  5. Keep a container of water nearby and a garden hose close

While you’re getting ready to entertain and considering all your deck ideas, bear in mind the location you put your fire pit. Do NOT put a portable fire pit on your deck if it is made of wood. This can be very dangerous! If you were to knock over the coals it can also ruin your deck’s walking surface.
